Before you start

Before making a promise

Example: Alex needs to ship 1 storage bag order to a US buyer. What needs checking before promising an arrival date?

Check the route before promising.

Step 1 · Read

Build a delivery plan

  • Package. Record the packed size and weight because the parcel, rather than the empty bag, is what travels.
  • Route. Check the destination, service and handoffs so you know what the quote covers.
  • Customs. Identify who supplies documents and handles import questions before assuming the carrier covers everything.

Step 2 · View

Plan the handoffs

  1. Pack: Measure the packed order

Check the parcel after packing. Protective material can change its dimensions and the service options available.

  2. Route: Confirm the route and roles

Ask which service, destination and handoffs the quote covers. Keep estimates separate from delivery promises.

  3. Check: Prepare the document questions

Describe the goods consistently across the order and shipping records. Ask who will provide the information needed at the border.

  4. Log: Keep a handoff record

Save the service, tracking reference and unresolved question together. A clear record helps you follow up when responsibility changes hands.

Step 3 · Match

Name the shipping stages

Transit

Movement between the stated points along a delivery route.

Customs

The import process for the destination’s requirements and declarations.

Landed cost

Product and delivery costs to a destination, with the included items stated.

A shipping quote is easier to assess when you know its route and included responsibilities.

Official sources

Check the current rules

Official check: use current destination customs guidance before classifying the product or estimating duties.

Requirements depend on your provider, product and destination.

Step 4 · Try

Test a shipping assumption

Example costs are prefilled. Try a different shipping assumption without changing the product.

  • Price: $40.00
  • Cost: $8.00
  • Shipping: $6.00

Step 5 · Choose

Check the next handoff

I cannot yet explain the parcel’s route.

Compare the quote and delivery service first. You postpone a promise until you know which handoffs still need attention.

I know the route, but the import questions remain.

Check the destination’s requirements and your product records. This adds preparation while reducing an avoidable gap in the plan.

Step 6 · Next

Write a specific plan

Read how packaging, carrier handoffs and import information fit together, and what to ask when a quote leaves responsibilities unclear.

Keep your next question in the workspace.

Keep this in mind

  • Write down packing, route, responsibilities and the next customs question.
  • Keep the evidence and assumptions separate.
  • Write the next question before spending more.
